IN SOME MIDNIGHT GARDEN, a spider who has perhaps been studying the ironwork of the old gates nearby, has spun a magnificent web of silver lines. She has danced her way around her circular snare, spinning spirals and spokes and loops and hoops to create an irresistible temptation for the sensitive fly with an aesthetic eye.

Small drops of fresh blood already sparkle like rubies on the moonlit fibres of the wonderful web, warning the wary that this way danger lies. But for the truly wise fly, this is the perfect place in which to die. After all, death will come sooner or later; he might as well make his last moments as splendid as possible. And coming close to such a sagacious spider might just open up his eyes to another kind of life, a life lived through on the other side of the web of wonder.
