HERE IS A MANDALA for the modern mind, a mandala that reflects the mad dance of the modern mind back to it. A tangential tango of frenetic and frenzied thoughts, whiplashing out in all directions like jagged jolts of negative energy, like bolts of destructive lightning or electricity. This is the whirlwind of thought, like a deranged spider on speed, its legs buckling under the stress of its spinning, tortured dance.

But this vision can be viewed in another way. For even this enervating energy is held in check by the calming circle. Even here, in all this chaos and confusion, there is an underlying pattern, a regular rhythm. When you step back a while to survey the whole, it settles into equilibrium, and the cool green space that was always there underneath all the action reveals itself, restful and relaxing and serene.
