THESE ARE NO ORDINARY FLOWERS. They have not grown in the worldly garden alone; they are nourished also by the light of an inner sun. They are the rare and exotic blooms that appear to us when we are seeing beyond the surface of the world, glimpsing the realm of essences and the hidden blueprint of creation. The intricately interlocking nature of all living forms emerges clearly from the meditation. The darkness that shadows the light is woven inextricably into the fabric of life.

The vaguely threatening quality of some of these flowers is an inherent part of their beauty. As in nature, parasitic and poisonous plants may grow entwined with the fairest flowers and fruits. Nature does not discriminate; it allows all to flourish equally. The work of discernment is up to us. We may recognise the beauty of a poisonous plant, but we are free to leave it alone, and usually it will not then harm us.
